You get what you pay for…at Mastro’s Ocean Club

I always say you get what you pay for… and Mastro’s is worth every penny.  From the drinks to dessert, everything is more than what you expect.  Especially at the Ocean Club in Malibu.

We recently took a trip up to Malibu just to visit the Mastro’s Ocean Club up there. We have been to Mastro’s restaurants many times, but none has the views quit like this one. So much so in fact, there was actually a line to get in! A line of people outside, waiting for the doors to open and get those first coveted seats at the bar.  Sure, I’ve seen lines at nightclubs and on tv during “black Friday,” but at a fine dining restaurant?  I was even more shocked to find out this is a normal occurrence. Luckily, we had reservations.  And after being told we had a 2.5 hour time limit to our meal because we had one of the perfect tables in thee house, we had a wonderful time.

Probably one of my favorite things about all Mastro’s are their martinis. Unlike any other martini I’ve ever had, they are served over dy ice and the “fog” the drink put off is so cool (for lack of a better term).  Not only that but they are perfectly strong and you even get the extra in the shaker. You almost get a 2 for 1 deal… probably the only “deal” you’ll find there though at $17 a piece (if I remember correctly). Again worth it.  I opted for the Orange Cosmo that night. Perfection.

My husband discovered the best substitute for a pre dinner salad ever… a veggie sushi roll. How perfect is that? It’s literally a salad wrapped in rice paper, and it will be my go to from now on when available.

I couldn’t go to an Ocean Club and not order seafood so I chose the Chilean Sea Bass and my husband ordered Pacific Swordfish (aka the steak of the sea). We also enjoyed roasted brussel sprouts, steamed asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes for our sides. My parents enjoyed the filet.

They surprised us with their signature Warm Butter Cake for dessert, and it too was amazing. I am more of a Key Lime Pie kinda girl, and was pleasantly surprised at how good this butter cake was. Again, everything is better than you expect. I did not take many photos (again) as I have more of a habit of enjoying the moment rather than interrupting it with pictures. And I’m okay with that.

We had a wonderful time and can’t wait to go back just for martinis and dessert. And although we love Malibu, for our sanity in avoiding drive time and traffic we will head to the Newport location next time. Or better yet, back in North Scottsdale.

Bon Appetite!
